Open Kitchen Designs Maximize Space

The style statement that radiates from a tastefully done, visually enticing kitchen, sets the tone for the rest of your home. Whether it’s entertaining your guests or extended family, your choices for modern kitchen designKitchen Designs for Luxury Home Buyers with open floor plans are vast. Some of the elements to consider are tearing down walls, using kitchen islands more effectively, blending your formal dining space with an open kitchen design and how to create a harmony between other rooms with design details. A kitchen should be a place where you can do much more than just cook.

According to realtors and luxury house brokers, the number 1 consideration for a luxury homebuyer, is the kitchen. An open kitchen with plenty of storage space can add value to your home. Pairing the latest professional kitchen appliances with appropriate lighting can make even the best chef’s envious of what you own.

Maximize Your Kitchen Space By Tearing Down The Walls

A space that is not concealed by walls or heavy furniture will integrate with other rooms in the back of your house much easier.  An open kitchen plan lets you socialize with your guests easier than the narrow galley or L-Shaped designs found in older homes built before 1975. Often we are asked to design kitchens in older farmhouses and country homesteads that were originaly constructed over 50 years ago. So one of the first things we do is to understand where the load bearing walls are and which walls are there to just separate rooms.

Single wall kitchens can help you maximize the space around the kitchen with floor to ceiling cabinets and appliances on a single wall or we can design your kitchen with two adjacent walls left in place. Many clients like the look of half wall patricians to help separate connecting rooms.

Kitchen Island Designs for Open Floor Plans

Counter and storage space can be maximized with the help of one or more kitchen islands plus some pantry space accessible from the kitchen. Kitchen island designs with seating have been very popular for years. As you can see in this picture from our Transitional Kitchen Portfolio, this kitchen island includes a gas stovetop, seating and plenty of cabinet space.

Open Kitchen Designer Blends Adjacent Areas

It's important to design your kitchen so that it is in harmony with the areas adjacent to your kitchen. You can separate the kitchen space with flooring changes, discrete ceiling accents and changing color schemes. We like to maintain continuity of the wood finish used for kitchen cabinets and islands with perhaps the woodwork of the adjacent room. The family room next to this kitchen has some beautiful oak molding and blends well with the lighter color oak cabinets you see here.

The hard wood flooring continues into the family room and the decorator used a nice area rug to help separate between the two spaces. If you would like to use different materials in your living and dining areas, the colors you select should work in harmony. Nothing wrong with a little contrasting color, just be careful. Some colors just do not work well together.

A dining space adjacent to this modern kitchen masterpiece on Houzz seems to flow nicely from dining room through the kitchen and into the sunken family room.  The furniture you select for the dining area should be conducive to how you plan on using the dining room.

Good Lighting for Open Kitchen Plans is Imperative

To show off the salient features of your kitchen, proper lighting is paramount. The main lighting should encircle the kitchen as we have done here with this country kitchen below. We are using glass pendant lights that look like mini chandeliers to accent the island area and the window above the sink brings in some beautiful natural lighting when mother nature is shining.

Areas for prep and cooking are illuminated with LED under cabinet lighting. The range area has some task lighting under the stainless-steel hood and looks wonderful in the evening when dimmed to accent the brushed steel and cast iron in that section of the kitchen.
